Adam is a handmade chandelier created for Frankenstein, an exhibition by Tokonoma.
Constructed from industrial hand-welted steel and discarded leather, the piece takes the traditional form of a chandelier and strips it down to its most imposing elements. Instead of illuminating a space, Adam exists as a dark, suspended mass — a presence that occupies the room without serving its conventional purpose.
The name Adam references the Creature’s words in Frankenstein, calling his creator his “Adam.” It reflects the relationship between creator and creation, and the point at which something made begins to exist beyond the intentions of its maker.
The leather carries its own scars, irregularities and imperfections, making each section inherently unique. What was once part of a living body is transformed into an object that hangs between the manufactured and the organic.
